What to expect
from your pro.

Mobile tyre fitting means the tyre fitter comes to you rather than you driving to a garage and waiting. They work from a van with a tyre machine, a wheel balancer and a jack, and can change most car and small van tyres at the kerb, on a driveway or in a work car park.

It is handy when you have a slow puncture you do not want to drive on, when a tyre is close to the legal limit and you cannot spare a morning, or when you have a business vehicle that needs to keep working. In the UK the minimum legal tread for a car is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around the whole circumference. Many drivers replace well before that.

On AYS Concierge you enter your postcode and the job, then local mobile tyre fitters can quote. It helps to give your tyre size from the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V, so the quote matches the tyre you need. You see the price before you confirm and pay securely through AYS.

Replacement tyres

One, two or four new tyres fitted and balanced, with the old tyres taken away for disposal.

Puncture repair

A nail or screw in the main tread can often be repaired. Damage near the sidewall usually means a new tyre.

Wheel balancing

Fixes a vibration through the steering wheel at speed, often after a tyre change or losing a balance weight.

Swapping wheels or fitting a spare

Your spare or a second set of wheels put on, nuts torqued correctly, and the punctured wheel checked.

Winter and all-season tyres

Fitting or swapping seasonal tyres, either onto your existing wheels or as a separate set you keep.

Tyre check before a long drive

Tread depth, pressures, cuts and bulges checked, so you know where you stand before a motorway trip.

Van and fleet tyres

Tyres for small vans and company cars done in your yard or car park, so vehicles stay on the road.

Pricing

How the price
is worked out

Tyres come in so many sizes and brands that this service works best as a quote. Give your tyre size, your vehicle and where it is parked, and local fitters will send a price. What changes the price: the tyre size and brand, how many tyres you need, run-flat or larger wheels, a locking wheel nut that needs removing, and the distance to you. Old tyre disposal is usually included, but check the quote.

Before the visit

How to get
ready

  • Find the locking wheel nut key, usually in the glovebox, boot well or with the spare wheel.
  • Read your tyre size from the sidewall and add a photo of it to your request.
  • Park on firm, level ground with space beside the car for the fitter to work and the van to park close.
  • If the car is in a work or private car park, check the fitter is allowed in and tell them how to get access.
  • Leave the keys with someone if you will not be there, and say which tyres need doing.

Choosing the right pro

Every fitter is reviewed by the AYS team and passes a photo ID check before they can take bookings. We ask tyre fitters to upload their insurance and any training or qualifications, and the team reviews what they send. On a profile, look for what they show. A good fitter will check the wheel and the condition of the other tyres, and torque the wheel nuts to the right setting.

FAQs

Mobile tyres:
your questions.

Something else? Ask us and a person will reply.

What is the legal tyre tread depth in the UK?

For cars, the legal minimum is 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. Tyres also must not have cuts, lumps or bulges, or exposed cords. Grip in the wet drops as tread wears down, so many drivers choose to replace tyres before they reach the legal limit.

Can a mobile tyre fitter repair a puncture?

Often, yes. If a nail or screw has gone into the main part of the tread and the hole is small, the tyre can usually be repaired from the inside. If the damage is close to the sidewall, the sidewall itself is damaged, or the tyre has been driven on flat, it normally needs replacing. The fitter will check it before deciding.

What if I have lost my locking wheel nut key?

Tell the fitter when you request a quote. Many mobile fitters can remove locking wheel nuts with special tools, but it takes time and may change the price. If you can find the key's code, sometimes on a card in the handbook, a replacement key can be ordered, though that takes longer.

Do I need to be there while the tyres are fitted?

Not always. If the car is somewhere the fitter can reach safely and you can leave the keys with someone, they can do the job without you. Leave clear notes in the booking about which tyres to change and where the locking wheel nut key is. Your address is only shared with the fitter once the booking is confirmed.

Where can a mobile tyre fitter work?

Usually on a driveway, a quiet street with space to park the van, or a car park where they are allowed in. They need firm, level ground to jack the car safely. A steep slope, soft gravel or a busy main road may not be safe. If in doubt, send a photo of where the car is parked.

Do I need to replace tyres in pairs?

It is generally recommended to have tyres with similar tread depth on the same axle, so the car handles evenly. If one tyre is badly worn or damaged and the other on that axle is also low, replacing both makes sense. If the other one is nearly new, one may be fine. Your fitter can advise once they see them.
