Booking a pro
in Leeds.

Leeds has perhaps more surviving back-to-back terraces than anywhere in the UK, along with large through terraces in Headingley and Kirkstall, Victorian villas in Chapeltown and Roundhay, and 1930s semis in Chapel Allerton. A plumber, roofer or cleaner who works here learns quickly that a red brick back-to-back with no back door is a very different job from a stone villa with a long garden.

AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so we cannot promise that pros already cover every LS postcode. Enter your postcode to see who covers your street today. If nobody does yet, you can still request quotes, and if you are a tradesperson or mobile pro in Leeds, you can join now and choose the LS districts you want to work in.

Back-to-backs, through terraces and villas

Much of inner Leeds was built in red brick from local clay, and back-to-back terraces still line streets in Harehills, Holbeck and Armley. They share a back wall with the house behind, so there is no rear access: everything comes through the front door, and pipes, flues and wiring often have to share one outside wall. Many are well over a century old, so expect older wiring, cold solid walls and loft rooms that were added later.

Headingley and Kirkstall have bigger through terraces, many now let to students, while Roundhay, Chapeltown and Chapel Allerton add Victorian villas and 1930s semis. When you book, say which kind of house you live in, whether there is a back yard or gennel, and how many floors the pro will be working on.

Good to know
before you book.

Local things that change how a job is done, or what it costs.

No charging clean air zone

Leeds dropped its planned charging Clean Air Zone after a joint review with government found air quality had already improved, so a pro's van is not charged for driving into the city. Many Leeds neighbourhoods are smoke control areas, though, which limits which stoves and fuels you can use. Check the council's postcode map before having a stove fitted.

Permit parking and tradesperson vouchers

Several Leeds streets have resident permit schemes, and each household only gets one visitor permit. Leeds City Council runs a tradesperson scheme for temporary parking vouchers, with terms that apply. If you live in a permit area, tell the pro when you book and check the council's parking pages for the current rules.

Skips and scaffolding on the pavement

Narrow terraced streets often leave no room for a skip or scaffold on a drive. In Leeds, a skip on the road needs a council permit applied for by the skip company, and scaffolding over a pavement needs a highway licence, usually taken out by the scaffolder. Both need notice, so plan building and roof jobs a little ahead.

Student moves in Headingley and Hyde Park

Headingley and Hyde Park are home to many students from the University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett, and lots of tenancies end over the summer. End of tenancy cleaners, removals and man and van services get busy around then, so book early if your move falls at the end of the academic year.

Can I book a pro in Leeds on AYS yet?

It depends on your postcode. AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so some LS districts may already have pros and others may not. Enter your postcode to see who covers your street today. If no one does yet, you can still post a request for quotes, and local pros who join can pick it up.

Is there a Clean Air Zone charge in Leeds?

Leeds City Council decided a charging Clean Air Zone was no longer needed after a joint review with government found air pollution had fallen below legal limits. That means there is no charge for older vans driving into the city today. Rules can change, so check the council's website for the current position.

What should I tell a pro about my back-to-back house?

Say that it is a back-to-back, because there is no back door or rear access and all tools, materials and furniture come through the front. Mention how many floors there are, whether the loft or cellar has been converted, and where you can park. That helps the pro plan the job and give an accurate price.

Can I have a wood burner fitted in Leeds?

Many parts of Leeds are covered by smoke control orders, which limit the fuels and appliances you can use. Leeds City Council has a postcode map that shows whether your address is in a smoke control area. Check it before you buy, and ask your installer to confirm the stove is suitable for your location.
