What to expect
from your pro.
Electrical work is one job where it really matters who does it. A loose connection can sit unnoticed for years, then overheat. A good electrician works safely, tests what they have done, and gives you the right paperwork at the end.
On AYS you can book standard jobs, like an EICR or swapping a light fitting, at a fixed price shown before you pay. For anything that needs a look first, such as tracing a fault or replacing a consumer unit, you describe the job and local electricians send a quote. Tell them the age of the property and add a photo of your fuse box if you can.
In England and Wales, some electrical work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. That includes adding a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit and some work in bathrooms. It must be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, such as NICEIC or NAPIT, or signed off by building control. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

How the price
is worked out
Standard jobs, such as an EICR or replacing a light fitting, can be booked at a fixed price shown upfront. Other work is quoted. The price depends on the size and age of the property, how many circuits there are, how hard it is to run cables under floors or through walls, the parts you choose, and whether testing and certification for notifiable work is needed. Quotes are free, with no obligation.
How to get
ready
- Make sure the electrician can reach the consumer unit (fuse box) easily.
- Take a photo of the consumer unit and the area you want work done in.
- Clear furniture away from walls where sockets or cables are going.
- Tell them the age of the property and any recent electrical work.
- Expect the power to be off for part of the visit, so plan around fridges and computers.
Choosing the right pro
Every electrician on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before taking bookings. Electricians can upload qualifications, insurance and competent person scheme membership for us to check. For notifiable work in England and Wales, ask which scheme they belong to, and you can look them up on the scheme's register.
What is an EICR and do I need one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is an inspection and test of the wiring in a property. It flags anything dangerous or in need of improvement. Private landlords in England must have one at least every five years. Homeowners are not legally required to, but one is useful when buying an older home or if you suspect a problem.
What electrical work is notifiable under Part P?
In England and Wales, notifiable work includes installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, and certain work in rooms with a bath or shower. This work must be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, or checked by building control. Smaller jobs, like replacing a socket or light fitting, are usually not notifiable.
What certificate should I get after electrical work?
After new work, an electrician should give you an Electrical Installation Certificate, or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for smaller jobs. For notifiable work done by a scheme member, you should also receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep them safe, as buyers and insurers may ask for them.
Why does my electricity keep tripping?
A trip switch or RCD cuts the power when it detects a fault, so it is doing its job. Common causes include a faulty appliance, water getting into an outside socket or light, or damaged wiring. Try unplugging everything on that circuit and resetting it. If it still trips, book an electrician to trace the fault.
Do I need to replace my old fuse box?
Not always. An older consumer unit is not automatically unsafe. An electrician may recommend replacing it if it has no RCD protection, uses rewireable fuses, is damaged, or cannot safely take new circuits like an electric shower or EV charger. An EICR is a good way to find out.
How long does it take to add a socket?
Adding a socket from an existing circuit is usually a short job if the cable can be run easily. It takes longer if floors need lifting, walls need chasing, or a new circuit is needed. Your electrician will also test the circuit afterwards, which is part of doing the job properly.
