A handyman,
for the odd jobs.
The shelves you bought months ago, the door that will not close, the wardrobe still in its box. Find a local handyman and get the list done.
What to expect
from your pro.
Every home has a list of small jobs that never quite get done. None of them is big enough to call in a specialist trade, but together they can take a whole weekend and a trip to buy the right drill bit. A handyman is the person for that list.
On AYS you can book common handyman jobs, like flat pack assembly or mounting a TV, at a fixed price shown before you pay. If you have a mixed list, describe each job in your request and local pros will send a quote for the lot. Photos help, and so do measurements, the type of wall, and any product names or links.
A handyman is great for general repairs and fitting, but some work needs a specialist by law. Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and new electrical circuits or consumer unit work needs a qualified electrician. If your list includes anything like that, a good handyman will tell you and suggest booking the right trade.

How the price
is worked out
Single standard jobs, like assembling a piece of flat pack or mounting a TV, can be booked at a fixed price shown upfront. A list of mixed jobs is usually quoted. What changes the price: how many jobs there are, how long each takes, the type of walls, whether fixings and materials are supplied, and if anything needs taking away. Quotes are free and you can say no.
How to get
ready
- Write a list of every job, with measurements and photos where you can.
- Have flat pack boxes, brackets and parts in the room where they will be used.
- Decide exactly where shelves, TVs and pictures should go before the visit.
- Tell the handyman about any pipes or cables you know of in the walls.
- Clear space around each job so they can work without moving furniture.
Choosing the right pro
Every handyman on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before taking bookings. They can also upload insurance, qualifications and DBS certificates for us to check, shown on their profile. If someone will be working in your home while you are out, or around children, you may want to look for a DBS check.
What jobs can a handyman do?
A handyman covers general odd jobs: flat pack assembly, shelves, curtain poles, TV mounting, picture hanging, small repairs, sealant, door adjustments and outdoor fixes. Many can tackle a mixed list in one visit. Larger or specialist work, such as rewiring, gas or structural building, is better booked with the right trade.
Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work?
Some small, non-notifiable jobs may be fine for an experienced handyman, but gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. In England and Wales, notifiable electrical work, like adding a new circuit, must be done by a registered electrician or signed off by building control. If in doubt, book an electrician or plumber.
Can you mount a TV on a plasterboard wall?
Often yes, with the right fixings and bracket for the weight of the TV, or by fixing into the timber studs behind the board. Heavier TVs and swing-arm brackets need more care. Tell the handyman the TV size, the bracket you have and the type of wall, and they can confirm what is needed.
Should I buy the materials or will the handyman bring them?
It depends on the job. For flat pack and TV mounting you will usually have the item already, and the handyman brings tools and standard fixings. For repairs, some prefer to buy the right parts themselves. Agree it in your request so the quote is clear about what is included.
Can I book a handyman for several small jobs?
Yes, and it is often the best use of a visit. List every job in your request with photos, and local pros can quote for the whole list. Put the jobs in order of priority, so if time runs short the most important ones get done first.
Why should tall furniture be fixed to the wall?
Wardrobes, bookcases and chests of drawers can tip forward if a child climbs them or drawers are pulled open together. Most flat pack furniture comes with an anti-tip strap or bracket for this reason. A handyman can fit it into the wall with a fixing that suits the wall type.
